Article: IntelŪ PentiumŪ D 805 and IntelŪ PentiumŪ D 820 Duel (Mainstream Dual Core Brethren)

Target Audience: E (N=Newbie, E=Hardware Enthusiast, O=Overclocker, B=Budget
Many thanks to IntelŪ for providing the processor.

IV. Closing Thoughts

Both processors have performed according to their expected performance level. The bigger brother IntelŪ PentiumŪ D 820 shows that it can really take on a much better tasks than the IntelŪ PentiumŪ D 805. While my experience with gaming really didn't show any improvement, on the typical multi-tasking usage, I feel a much smoother experience, though it could be just my perception. I particularly love running registry cleaner from a really "messed up" Microsoft* Windows XP SP2 which I Ghosted for this kind of situation: running the registry cleaner analyzer while doing a full antivirus scan on a slow IDE hard drive and the bigger, much beefier IntelŪ PentiumŪ D 820 comes out as a sure winner.
However, the above is almost like an extreme scenario to actually feel the benefit of the faster and better IntelŪ PentiumŪ D 820. But hey, for a typical non-techie user who loves experimenting with stuff, installing and uninstalling applications, adding blings and other beautifying downloadables for their PC, I can see where the ~5.x% would be beneficial.
For a home database server, the IntelŪ PentiumŪ D 820 is a much more capable system because of the much better memory bandwidth. While file access should be equal if not totally the same for both processors, the bandwidth allocation for the IntelŪ PentiumŪ D 820 is much more suited for such demanding tasks, ensuring the CPU can process information from the memory a lot faster.
In gaming, specially high-end 3D FPS, the difference is hardly noticeable if even mentionable. The performance is equal, subjectively speaking. But benchmarking shows a different tune, with the IntelŪ PentiumŪ D 805 taking a beating, though small.
Typical multi-media stuff is almost the same, except when doing large file encoding and rendering. If hardcore rendering and encoding isn't your regular vanilla task, then an IntelŪ PentiumŪ D 805 is just about right. For the more serious one with extra moolah on the wallet, you can't go wrong with the bigger and better IntelŪ PentiumŪ D 820.
I can go on and on about the "objective" difference in score between the two and the IntelŪ PentiumŪ D 820 will come out as a clear winner. But on the subjective point of view and "experiential"-based usage, unless there are many, and I mean really many, applications floating around in your desktop, including but not limited to, spyware, viruses, and trojans, then the difference can hardly be felt.

There you have it, I hope you enjoy this mini comparison as much as I enjoyed jotting down the results and doing the tests. Till next time...
