Article: Overclocking the Intel® Pentium® 4 506 Processor

Target Audience: E/O (N=Newbie, E=Hardware Enthusiast, O=Overclocker, B=Budget
Many thanks to Intel® for providing the processor.

I. Introduction

The Intel® Pentium® 4 506 Processor is based on 90nm technology, sporting the Prescot core on the LGA775 package. As many enthusiasts will noticed, this processor core is not the latest release, in fact, it's been in the market for quite a while. However this is also the very reason to have a look and see on how this core matures and performs under overclocking stress.

Primarily geared on the mainstream market, it is designed to deliver performance across usages—such as image processing, video content creation, games and multimedia—where end-users can truly appreciate the performance. It has great features for digital home computing, such as support for EM64T to enable the system to address more than 4GB of system memory and advance security functionality thru Execute Disable Bit that can prevent certain classes of malicious "buffer overflow" attacks when combined with a supporting operating system.

This processor is slated as the lowest part number among the Intel® Pentium® 4 series that is based on the newer socket. It is currently priced at ~Php5500.00 (~$105.00), and should fit most of those who are looking for a high performing processor that will not burn the wallet. And as such, this processor being the lowest-priced in its catagory, this will serve as a good starting point to push it up and see how this processor will fare in both in stock and overclock settings. Time to get this baby going, but first, let's lay down the details of this processor.

II. Specification

The Intel® Pentium® 4 506 Processor is based on the new "socket" LGA775. It is based on the Prescot core, with 1MB of L2 cache. This processor is an evolution of the earlier released Intel® Pentium® 4 505. Between Intel® Pentium® 4 506 and Intel® Pentium® 4 505 is another brother, the Intel® Pentium® 4 505J. The difference among all thse flavors is that the Intel® Pentium® 4 505 is not EM64T enabled, and does not have XD (Execute Disable) feature. The Intel® Pentium® 4 505J however is enhanced with XD, and finally, the processor in our test bench today, Intel® Pentium® 4 506, has both the EM64T and XD features.

The Intel® Pentium® 4 506 has the following specifications:
